Hickory Hill
Pines is run by a slow moving (but handsome) old guy in a wheelchair, and I don't get
around as efficiently as I used to, so an email or call ahead

to be here to show you what we have, and to try to have whatever you're
looking for ready when you get here.
Bring your CELL PHONE with you and call

Evergreen Trees up to 9'- 16'+ ask
about these larger sizes
Choose Evergreen trees here near Waynesboro, Virginia, an easy
country drive on I-64 from
Charlottesville, VA in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Make an outing to
our scenic country Christmas tree farm a part of your Christmas season! Pick out one of
the nicest Spruce Christmas Trees in Virginia!
|
| Everything we sell is grown right here on
our tree farm at Hickory Hill Nursery in
Fishersville, VA. We proudly have lots of repeat customers who have
been coming here many years for their Christmas trees. |
PINES:
Pines do
well all over Virginia, preferring loamy soil over red clay. Fast Growing...
But we don't recommend trying to grow White Pines as much as we used to
because of fungus or borers or whatever it is that's been causing so much
trouble lately.
|
WHITE PINE:
Long soft
green needles.
December, 2008- White pines
you can choose and cut for Christmas trees. We used to
grow a lot of these, but we stopped planting them after the last batch
started dying form some kind of fungus that is clobbering White Pines all
over. We don't plan to plant any more White Pines.
Cut White Pine trees up to 9'+ $35 (and quite a lot taller if
you like a natural, open look to them).

|
SCOTCH
PINE:
December, 2008- We have a pretty good supply of
Scotch Pines you can choose and cut. A very popular Cut Christmas tree since it holds it's needles better than
Spruce, and is more rigid than White Pine. Scotch Pine Christmas trees
hold their ornaments without the branches sagging quite as much as a White
Pine would do.
We can dig
Scotch Pine. Deposit with order required. We have some really big ones we
can dig that are perfect if you need a privacy screen, email us about these
if you are interested, best to plant them in the winter, waiting till April
is a really bad idea
Cut White Pine trees up to 9'+ $35

|
SPRUCE:
Our Blue Spruce Christmas trees are
very popular.
Spruce
do well all over Virginia, tolerating just about any reasonable soil
conditions. They don't like having weeds growing up against them, nor
do they tolerate being jammed too close to other plants or else they will
develop empty spots, whereas a Norway or white spruce will keep green
branches despite being a little crowded.
|
BLUE "Colorado" SPRUCE:
Among the most beautiful Christmas trees found anywhere.
Most Blue Spruce are from seedlings, which have genetic color variations from bluer -
greener. Slow
growing, they require extra years of labor, so cost a bit more.
Short
stiff needles.
Choose & Cut $65 each up to 9'+ tall, and we
dug a few so you can plant them after Christmas if you
like.
|

|
|
|
|
|
NORWAY SPRUCE:
The
hardiest spruce, indeed the toughest tree we grow, thriving even in hard
red clay. Faster growing then Blue Spruce.
Short
softer green needles, but you don't want to cut one of these too early or
let it dry out because they tend to drop needles. Yet, we've been warning
folks about this and selling them for many years now, and seldom ever
gotten any complaints about needle drop.
Choose & Cut $65 each up to 9'+ tall, but there's only a few
left. We might have a few B&B
to plant in early December, meanwhile I recommend our cute little
White Spruce if you want a nice, easy
to handle B&B spruce tree.
|

|
|
WHITE SPRUCE:
My New
Favorite kind of spruce tree, we have nice White Spruce trees dug for
planting, ~3' - 5' tall.
I think these are nicer, fuller trees than Norway or Blue Spruce.
Short
softer green needles. but they also drop their needles pretty bad when you
cut them, so I don't recommend cutting them till after December 15.
IMPORTANT
NOTE - White spruce are the worst for
dropping needles after they are cut or dug. It
doesn't seem to affect the long term survivability for B&B (dug)
trees. In fact, my guess is that losing a few needles might actually increase
their survivability by helping to balance the root
: shoot ratio (only click this root
: shoot ration link if you have way, way too much time on your hands,
cause it has way too much information for practical purposes here) after
we cut so many roots digging them, so a little less green on op prolly
helps for the first year while the tiny feeder roots catch up so they can
support the top of the tree.
Choose & Cut $65 each, up to 10'+ tall. Limited supply. Best
to wait till December 15 to cut and buy a spare vacuum cleaner bag
since they drop needles bad.

|
FIRS:
Fir trees hold their needles
extremely well after cutting. Your cut fir tree will probably still look
fresh till March!
They say Fir Trees prefer high
altitude...
Well, yes, but we have some nice ones
growing here. Remember ALL TREES WE SELL WERE GROWN RIGHT HERE AT HICKORY
HILL NURSERY in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
I don't know how well Fir Trees would
do in hotter dryer summers on the Charlottesville/Richmond side of the
Blue Ridge. Firs don't like extremely hot and dry, but keeping it watered
will help avoid heat / drought related stress, as would providing a little
shade and wind break. They prefer loamy soil over heavy clay, and be sure
not to let them dry out during the hot dry summer if you are growing them.
Firs have short soft needles.
|
FRAZER FIR:
$65 choose & Cut up to 9', limited supply, our taller Frazers tend
to be relatively skinny since we planted them a little close together.
|

|
|
CONCOLOR FIR:
SOLD OUT
Outstanding Tangeriney Scent!
.
|

|
|
CANAAN FIR:
Choose & Cut $65 each up to 9'+ tall, very limited supply.
CANAAN FIRS ARE OUR NICEST TREES! They are planted in a far away
corner of our tree farm, so call when you get here and we'll point out the
way to them.
|
We Our nicest Christmas Trees-
Canaan Fir Trees
|
|
BALSAM
FIR:
Don't grow very well here since they like higher altitude.
Yes, we have no Balsam Firs.
|
|
|
DOUGLASS FIR:
Don't grow very well here since they like higher altitude. I
have a friend who can dig some nice ones about 4' tall to sell, but they don't
grow here and they certainly won't grow east of here, forget about
planting a Douglass fir in Charlottesville / Albemarle county, for
example. They also have a nice tangerine smell.
Yes, we have no Douglass Firs.
|
|
Larger Trees-
We have some really tall White Pine, Blue Spruce, & Scotch
Pine, unsheared, about16' & up if you don't mind them being
unsheared with a loose natural appearance, they are the same price, when
sold as cut Christmas trees, as regular sheared Christmas trees. These cut
Christmas trees are popular with Churches, dorms, and those who have a
very high ceiling.

| RHODODENDRON
UPDATE;
We aren't selling any of the rhododendrons we are trying to grow
until we fix some insect and other problems. Once we have
healthy Rhododendrons that we think will survive when we sell them,
we'll put them on this website. Prolly going to be at least a couple
years... Tricky things, Rhododendron... Till then, I suggest you buy
your Rhodies (AKA Rodeo-dendrons, as Mike Crane called
them in Mrs. Landis' 9th Grade English class back in 1975)
from your friendly local garden center, or maybe even one of those
big ol' Wal-Mart type stores, I dunno... |
Other
Plants:
What about Rhododendron???
We used to specialize in
them... I thought I was involved in a partnership...
My advice to anyone in any
kind of a business partnership:
EXTRICATE
YOURSELF IMMEDIATELY
so you have
control over your own business, your own assets, and your own future, and
won't have to start you business from scratch.
Rhododendron??? OH MY,
No longer...
~
Sigh ~
... but one day! I'm just starting to
plant little ones again.
